STRAY PASSAGES
STRAY PASSAGES
NACHO ETERNO, NUTSA GOGALADZE, MICHAEL MCGRATH AND GUY RUBICON
JUNE 13 - JULY 17, 2024
A daydream can be born from an instance -- a brief flash of the external world that gives way to a flood of associations, diverting our attention from the real to the imagined. As our minds begin to wander from the conscious paths we know and become lost within a tangled sea, reality fades to grey and we drift into a magical space.
Artists have often sought to arouse the unconscious desires that lay in these waking reveries and give them material form. Each of the four artists presented in Stray Passages reach deep into the human psyche to fill the imaginative space of what can’t be perceived. Guy Rubicon's thickly painted depictions of ethereal forests give life to a host of nocturnal creatures and imaginary knights that seem to materialize from the shadows. Notably lighter in tone, Nutsa Gogaladze’s fair creatures evoke a perceived infinitude, conjuring shimmering glows of stardust that envelop our senses. A former tattoo artist, Nacho Eterno has developed a personal, pictographic language in paint -- a family of characters that shift between colorful symbols and graphic abstraction, all while maintaining an incredibly rich mark of the hand. And artist Michael McGrath masterfully balances atmospheric hues with flattened space to create a phantasmic world that explores personal themes of mysticism and mythology.
This online exhibition attempts to unlock the fantastic. We invite you to journey with these artists into their magnificent dreamworlds -- to drift amongst the meandering woodlands of our collective imagination, where time folds its wings and we're pulled away on a beam of moonlight.

NACHO ETERNO
Nacho Eterno (Nacho González, b. 1992) is a self-taught painter and ceramist from Spain, who in 2021, gave up his life as a Barcelona-based tattooist and muralist to devote himself to a quieter life creating paintings and ceramics in the Girona countryside. His work exudes an enigmatic charm, likely due to the confluence of disparate influences - nature and architecture, primitive art and contemporary currents. Featuring a personal iconography of imagined characters, animals and abstract elements confidently arranged within a flat pictorial space, Nacho's paintings emphasize his natural graphic sensibility. The flat, graphic quality of the work, however, is refreshingly foiled by the artist's direct and organic approach to painting, which is fluid and materials-based. Upon close inspection, the artist's hand is apparent everywhere - the highly textured surfaces and nuanced variation of color lend an earthiness and warmth to the work that makes it as personal as it is skilled.
NUTSA GOGALADZE
Nutsa Gogaladze (b. 1998) is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. Her artistic practice entails a process of self-reflection, expressed in a fairytale manner. The artist reflects, "Lately, soft pastels have become my medium of choice, allowing me to capture a tender atmosphere that resonates with the feeling of being at home. In my work, I like to create lighting effects and ambience by using muted colors and by producing texture with a sense of dynamism and movement. I draw inspiration from my musical experience, working in a purely fluid, and intuitive manner."
MICHAEL MCGRATH
Michael McGrath (b. 1977) is an American artist living in the village of Rhinebeck in New York's Hudson Valley. His recent work is inspired by his current upstate NY environment and its history, but also in his curiosity in the cults of mysticism, mythology and religion through the lens of naivety. His work also explores common childhood fears such as monsters, weather and insects, as well some fears that continue into adulthood, such as the fear of crowds, the fear of god(s), the unknown, and ultimately death. Michael embraces these fears and mysteries with the mindset, gestures and colors of both his inner child and outer adult.
GUY RUBICON
Guy Rubicon was born in Belgium in 1979. After completing his studies as a photographer he ventured into the art of traditional tattooing. The art and the craftsmanship in tattooing was something that had always fascinated him, but after a few years of being a professional tattooer he felt the need for more artistic freedom and started to experiment with oil paint. In his paintings, Rubicon investigates the relationship between mankind and the natural world. We are part of the natural world, but we are also nature's only creation that puts itself outside of it, looking at nature from a distance. This distance did not always exist - for a long time we lived in balance with the natural world, not understanding it, but respecting it, and because we did not understand it, it became a place of magic, mythology and wonder, but also fear, chaos and confusion.
