With a background in both sculpture and the applied arts, Rachel Cope's intuitive understanding of her chosen materials - watercolor, pencil and hand-made cotton rag paper - combined with a masterful application and keen eye, deepens the delicate tensions within her compositions. Notable in all of her work is Cope's ability to create warmth and depth through a sensitive application of translucent layers, allowing her images to come to life. Her serpentine subjects and the interplay between opposing textures - soft passages of colored wash and repetitive marks of pencil - create ephemeral movement within each work, vanishing and reappearing, navigating the imagination.
Rachel Cope graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2003 with a BFA in Sculpture and then went on to earn her MPS from The School of Visual Arts in Art Therapy. In 2013 she co-founded the award-winning brand Calico Wallpaper with a vision to transcend the boundaries of design and seamlessly integrate artistic elements into interior spaces. Calico Wallpaper has since become a leader of innovation and creativity within the design community, featuring collaborations with an impressive roster of top designers and artists such as Faye Toogood, Lindsey Adelman, Kelly Behun, Jason Miller, and many more.
Rachel has created work for esteemed galleries such as Friedman Benda, The Future Perfect, and Egg Collective. Her work has also been showcased at prestigious events and exhibitions, including DesignMiami, Salone Del Mobile, Maison et Objet, and is in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. In addition to her role as a pioneer of contemporary design, Rachel maintains a daily painting practice where she continuously explores new techniques and ideas from her studio in Chatham, New York.
