RACHEL COPE

With a background in both sculpture and the applied arts, Rachel Cope's intuitive understanding of her chosen materials - watercolor, pencil and hand-made cotton rag paper - combined with a masterful application and keen eye, deepens the delicate tensions within her compositions. Notable in all of her work is Cope's ability to create warmth and depth through a sensitive application of translucent layers, allowing her images to come to life. Her serpentine subjects and the interplay between opposing textures - soft passages of colored wash and repetitive marks of pencil - create ephemeral movement within each work, vanishing and reappearing, navigating the imagination.
